No one likes her story. +. Everyone laughs at him Work in pair: work out the use of the pronouns. The usage of one(s ), someone, no one, anyone and everybody: One and ones are used to replace a previously mentioned noun when we do not want to repeat that noun. One replaces a singular noun, and ones replaces a plural noun. Ex: Of the three bags, I like the red one (red one = red bag) Someone = somebody: Usually means “an unspecified or unknown person”. It is used in affirmative sentences and it is used with a singular verb Ex : Someone called when you were out. I heard the ring but I couldn’t answer the phone. Someone wants to see you c. Anyone = anybody . It is used with a singular verb in a negative statement or a question. Ex: Did anyone see you ? d. No one can be used with a singular affirmative verb to express a negative. Ex: No one was at home. No one came here yesterday. e. Everyone = everybody . It usually goes with a singular verb. It is used to refer to every person or all people. Ex : Have you asked everybody ? Everyone is ready.(= All the people are ready) Note:- These expressions have a singular meaning and take a singular verb, so personal pronouns and possessive adjectives should logically he/she. Him/her, his/her. However, in modern English plural forms are more common. Ex: - Everyone has come in, haven’t they ? -No one should leave their luggage on the bus. - Somebody, someone, anybody, anyone are singular words, but we often use they/them/their after these words. Ex : Someone has forgotten their umbrella. (= his or her umbrella) 2. Practice: Exercise 1 Work individually: complete the sentences, using someone, anyone, no one, or everyone . Ex : ............................likes snakes, do they ? No one likes snakes, do they ? 1. I don’t think ........................likes the film. It is so boring. 2. .................phoned while you were out, but they didn’t leave a message. 3. Does ....................mind if I eat first ? 4. There’s.....................at the door. Can you go and see who it is ? anyone Someone anyone someone 5. He didn’t come to class for three days, and ....................knows where he is. 6. Can we start now? Has ......................arrived?. 7. Everyone said they would attent the party, but ...................turned up. no one everyone no one Exercise 2. Work in pairs: Rewrite the sentences, using the pronoun one or ones Example: The Tet tree is there to attract good spirits and ward off evil spirits. The Tet tree is to attract good spirits and ward off evil ones. (evil ones = evil spirits) Of the three bags I like the blue bag. Mai is making a fruit cake. Huong is making a fruit cake, too. I like reading books, especially the books about the natural world. I don’t have a computer, and my father doesn’t want me to have a comput
